  The Consortium This morning I hoped everything would be back to normal, but they were still here. Those unspeakably huge metal spheres still lit the sky, like miniature suns, spreading evenly to the distant horizon. They ‘said’ they came in peace, they ‘said’ they were here to help, but I didn’t call it help when they conscripted my brother to work at the grain farm. The Disappearing Turtle

The Disappearing Turtle When I was six years old, my neighbour gave me a turtle. I can’t remember which neighbour, but I’m very grateful, as he was the BEST pet, and I will give you a few reasons why. They have a life expectancy of 30+ years, so you likely won’t be going through many turtles in your lifetime. They are super low maintenance, as long as you feed them in a bucket, and leave them in the bucket long enough to do their business. Finally, they teach you the importance of good hygiene, because they can carry salmonella so you need to wash your hands thoroughly whenever you touch them.  When I was eight or nine, the turtle vanished! We had him out walking around, as we normally did when we were home- he maybe have been running around with my guinea pig, who he got along very well with… so how does a turtle just disappear? Skagway, Alaska

Skagway Unless you have taken an Alaskan cruise, I’m going to guess Skagway is one of the most interesting places in the United States that you’ve never heard of. Skagway, AK, has a permanent population of about 800 people, which doubles in the summer with all the seasonal workers it requires to function. Skagway is not an easy place to get to. You can either take a ferry, which takes about an hour from Haines, and about six hours from Juneau. You can drive from Whitehorse, which takes about two hours, and is almost all uphill, until you get to the border. Or, you take an Alaskan cruise. Every single Alaskan cruise stops in Skagway, as has been the case as long as there have been Alaskan cruises, since the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. Oh, I almost forgot, you can also take a  62-hour ferry from Bellingham, Washington.
